The steel garage
A steel garage is an engineered, weather-tight building for storing and protecting things: the car, the motorbike, tools, bikes, the lawnmower, the kit you’d rather not leave to chance. It’s the most cost-effective way to get proper, secure, dry space — from £9,995 installed.
What it isn’t is a heated room. A bare steel shell follows the outside temperature, so it can be cold in winter and, without insulation, more prone to condensation. That’s fine for storage; it’s less ideal if you want to spend hours in there in January.
Choose steel if: you mainly need secure parking and storage, you want the best value, and you don’t need the space to be warm.
The insulated garage
An insulated garage wraps the same secure building in a 100mm insulated envelope, so it holds heat, resists condensation, and stays comfortable enough to use, not just store in. It’s the choice for a home workshop, gym, hobby room or studio — or simply a garage that’s warm and dry enough to potter in all year. You can add Climate Comfort (a Daikin heat pump) for full heating and cooling.
It costs more — from £26,950 installed — because it’s a genuinely different building, closer to a garden room with a vehicle door than a car shelter. But if you’ll spend real time in there, or you’re storing something temperature-sensitive (a classic car, gym equipment, a workshop full of tools), the insulation is what makes it usable.
Choose insulated if: you’ll work, train or spend time in the space, you want it warm and dry year-round, or you’re protecting something that doesn’t like cold and damp.
Condensation: the detail people miss
Condensation is the quiet enemy of a garage. Warm, damp air meeting a cold steel surface leaves moisture on everything — not ideal for tools or a cherished car. A bare steel garage manages this through ventilation; an insulated garage largely designs the problem out, because the inner surface stays closer to room temperature. If rust and damp are a concern, that’s a point for insulation.
Cost over time
Steel wins clearly on upfront price. Insulated wins if comfort and usability matter, because the alternative (buying a cheap garage and then retrofitting insulation and heating later) usually costs more and works less well than a purpose-built insulated building. Decide based on how you’ll use it, not just the sticker price. Steel vs insulated FAQs
Can I insulate a steel garage later?
You can retrofit insulation, but it usually costs more and performs worse than a purpose-built insulated building — retrofits fight thermal bridges and joints that a factory-made 100mm PIR panel designs out. If you know you’ll want warmth, buy insulated from the start.
Is an insulated garage warm enough for a gym or office?
Yes — that’s precisely what it’s for. The 100mm insulated envelope holds heat and manages condensation, and with Climate Comfort (a Daikin heat pump) it’s fully heated and cooled. It’s the same insulated steel build as our garden rooms.
Is a steel garage OK for a classic car?
A dry, secure steel garage is fine for a daily driver. For a cherished or classic car, insulation earns its keep: it keeps the inner surfaces near room temperature, which is what stops condensation settling on cold metal. (More on the comparison with brick.)
Do both lines come with the same door and warranty?
