The steel garage asks “where do my car, tools and bikes go?” The insulated garage asks “where do I want to spend time: work, train, build, all year round?” Below is how to choose.

What they have in common
Both are VeltHaven buildings: delivered and fully installed, with an insulated automatic sectional door, your choice of finish, and the VeltHaven 10-Year Structural Warranty (2 years full warranty + structural cover to year 10) — does not affect your statutory rights. Both are secure, weather-tight and built to last. The difference is the wall.
The steel garage
A steel garage is an engineered, weather-tight building for storing and protecting things: the car, the motorbike, tools, bikes, the lawnmower, the kit you’d rather not leave to chance. It’s the most cost-effective way to get proper, secure, dry space — from £5,995 installed for a Ready Design, or £9,995 designed your way.
What it isn’t is a heated room. A bare steel shell follows the outside temperature, so it can be cold in winter and, without insulation, more prone to condensation. That’s fine for storage; it’s less ideal if you want to spend hours in there in January.
Choose steel if: you mainly need secure parking and storage, you want the best value, and you don’t need the space to be warm.
The insulated garage
An insulated garage wraps the same secure building in a 100mm insulated envelope, so it is a building you can heat and use, not just store in. It’s the choice for a home workshop, gym, hobby room or studio — or simply a garage you can potter in all year. You can add Climate Comfort (a Daikin heat pump) for full heating and cooling.
It costs more — from £23,950 installed — because it’s a genuinely different building, closer to a garden room with a vehicle door than a car shelter. But if you’ll spend real time in there, or you’re storing something temperature-sensitive (a classic car, gym equipment, a workshop full of tools), the insulation is what makes it usable.
Choose insulated if: you’ll work, train or spend time in the space, you want an insulated building you can heat year-round, or you’re protecting something that doesn’t like cold and damp.
Condensation: the detail people miss
Condensation is the quiet enemy of a garage. Warm, damp air meeting a cold steel surface leaves moisture on everything — not ideal for tools or a cherished car. A bare steel garage manages this through ventilation. Insulation raises the temperature of the inner surface, and ventilation still has to remove the moisture; our condensation and ventilation guide explains both.
Cost over time
Steel wins clearly on upfront price. Insulated wins if comfort and usability matter, because the alternative (buying a cheap garage and then retrofitting insulation and heating later) usually costs more and works less well than a purpose-built insulated building. Decide based on how you’ll use it, not just the sticker price. Steel vs insulated FAQs
Can I insulate a steel garage later?
You can retrofit insulation, but it usually costs more and performs worse than a purpose-built insulated building — retrofits have to deal with thermal bridges and gaps around added framing, while a factory-made 100mm PIR panel arrives insulated. If you know you’ll want to heat it, buy insulated from the start.
Is an insulated garage warm enough for a gym or office?
That’s what it’s for. It has 100mm PIR insulated walls and roof, and Climate Comfort (a Daikin heat pump, at extra cost) heats and cools it. It’s the same insulated steel build as our garden rooms.
Is a steel garage OK for a classic car?

Do both lines come with the same door and warranty?
Yes: an insulated automatic sectional door and the VeltHaven 10-Year Structural Warranty are standard on both. The difference you’re paying for is the insulated wall and roof envelope.
